The Knight of Death is Book 1 in the Assassin Chronicles, a collection of thirty novels covering a time span from the year 2000 CE to sometime in the future. The main character is a grumpy Scottish alchemist who normally spends his time in his lab in Scotland making gold to support the activities of his clandestine Order: The Red Cross of Gold.
The Order is a branch of the long lost Templar Order of Christian Knights bent on keeping the original goals of the Templars alive until Armageddon when they believe they will fight on the side of Christ. The Order is governed by a 12 member Council which includes a Grand Master and eleven Knights imbued with divine mysteries. These semi-immortal Knights can live for hundreds of years as long as they keep themselves relatively intact. Unfortunately, when they become injured beyond the power of their divine immortality to heal (i.e. lose their heads, fall in a volcano, step on a bomb) the main character has to leave his home and release their souls from their mangled bodies. If their heads are still intact, he has to relieve them of it with the Golden Sword of the Cherubim, a tool of angelic origin passed down through the ages. He also has to relieve them of their various divine mysteries and convey them on their successor. This makes him rather unpopular among his Brethren of the Order.
His third duty as Alchemist/Assassin is finding and returning "lost sheep" to the fold. If they won't come home willingly, he brings them home in pieces.
One thing these Templar Council members must adhere to is the original Rule of Order which includes a number of arcane sins, greatest among these is avoiding the company of women.
As the series starts out, the Order has existed since the time King Philip of France and the Pope disbanded the Order and killed its leaders in 1307. Prior to that, they were an order within the order.
They've existed for centuries, fighting in all the important conflicts of the West, carrying on in the background and staying out of the limelight. When the Grand Master's apprentice goes AWOL and begins revealing their secrets to a modern off-shoot of the Ancient Order of the Rose, the Assassin is sent to America to bring him home: dead or alive.
Complacency plays a terrible trick on the Council. An unexpected development, a little carelessness and the apprentice's betrayal lead him and the Council in general down a ***bling path to destruction.
The apprentice warns his 'friends' that the Alchemist will come after him and kill him, but his friends are not really interested in protecting him. What they really want is the secret of immortality and they are above nothing to gain it. Attacking the Assassin with a formula given to them by the apprentice, produces an unexpected result, relieving him of his memory just long enough to get him into a world of trouble... with a woman no less.
While he is falling in love with one of his captors, his Brothers are plotting his eventual capture and death. Eventually, he must decided whether to repent and take his punishment or go on the lamb with his new found love.
The story takes many twists and turns as a series of events including sex, greed, devotion and vengeance combine to make fools of men who should have known better.
